- $20 per month or 66 cents per day can provide books, games and puzzles for primary school children in the Learning Centre;
- $34 per month or $1.11 cents per day can support a girl with everything she needs to start Form 1 at secondary school;
- $50 per month or $1.64 per day provides teaching supplies (fabric, scissors, thread) for a year in the tailoring program at the Longido District Learning Centre.
Determined to Succeed: Primary School Students Reach for Change
In the remote communities of northern Tanzania, getting to school is not always easy. Some children walk long distances in the early morning, while others must complete household chores before they can run off to class. These challenges often mean that children fall behind in basic reading, writing, and arithmetic.
The desire to learn is strong—both among students and teachers—but large class sizes make it difficult to give each child the attention they need.
This past year, the staff at Learning in Longido (LiL) offered 13 primary school students a chance to reach for change.
For six months, these students attended a half-day program at the Longido District Learning Centre, where they received focused instruction in basic literacy and numeracy. “I like to learn,” says Esupat. “Today, I am learning how to read and working on my letters.”
Kibake appreciates the supportive environment. “In a big class, I feel nervous asking questions when I don’t understand. Here, I can ask and not feel ashamed.”
At the end of the program, the students returned to their regular classrooms—this time with stronger skills and greater confidence.
Skilled, Strong, and Self-Reliant: Women Reaching for Change
Imagine the joy of learning a new skill which will dramatically change your life. This is the story of Ester. Ester, now 41, lives in a traditional Maasai community raising 8 children. With only a primary school education, she was isolated and had no means of generating an income to support her family.
Through TEMBO’s women’s outreach program, she learned about women’s rights, health and the importance of education. Through the Learning in Longido women’s tailoring program, Ester learned to sew and, together with four other women, she created a tailoring business in her village.
Now she has an invaluable skill and the ability to support her family – true change.
