THE CHALLENGE

In Tanzania, only 32.6% of girls complete four years of secondary schooling (UNESCO, 2023). Many drop out due to cultural barriers, early marriage, and unwanted pregnancies. Girls often face pressure from their families to assist with household chores during school breaks, leaving them little time for studies. Additionally, a lack of proper lighting at home makes it difficult to complete assignments. During school holidays, girls are particularly vulnerable to societal pressure to marry early, seen as a way to reduce the financial strain on their families.

THE SOLUTION

TEMBO is committed to empowering girls with the knowledge, tools, mentorship, and supportive learning environment they need to complete their secondary education with confidence. Since 2010, TEMBO has been developing multiple programs that, together, provide critical support for girls to complete their education.

Primary and Secondary Success (PASS): each fall, TEMBO coordinates a 10-week academic support program for girls aged 13-14 as they transition from primary to secondary school. This program provides critical support for language development and an understanding of core subjects, combined with a life skills program that builds confidence.

TEMBO English Camp: a 3-week program offered during the June school break for all TEMBO-sponsored girls. The program provides the girls with an opportunity to review lessons with local secondary school teachers, while also benefiting from the support of the TEMBO staff to address challenges at school.

Girl Care: a holistic program for girls most at risk of dropping out. Offering year-round support, the program combines safe and secure accommodation during school breaks at the TEMBO Girls’ Hostel, nutritious meals, exercise and study time.

THE IMPACT
Enrolling girls in secondary school is just the first step. To truly unlock their potential, they need ongoing, context-specific support and mentorship. With the right guidance, these girls don’t just stay in school—they thrive. Your support can be the difference between a starting secondary school and a future full of possibilities.

As of 2025, 61% of TEMBO-sponsored girls have completed a minimum of 4 years of secondary education, 22% of whom have completed a college or university program with an additional 17% currently in college or university.

With your support for TEMBO’s academic success programs, the girls can complete their studies and dream of a brighter future.
