A Unique Opportunity
Project
TEMBO invites you to participate in a project tour, cultural visit, and
safari to Tanzania, East Africa. You and five people
will make a 16-day escorted trip to Tanzania to meet and talk to grassroots
workers and project leaders. You will experience first hand the warmth
and hospitality of the Tanzanian people, meet TEMBO’s African partners,
and see the impact our support is making.
This is an exciting opportunity to:
- meet and talk to community leaders;
- visit village schools, communities, and women’s
groups;
- spend time with the Maasai in their tribal homeland; and
- go on safari to see and photograph animals in the wilds of Africa.
“Thank you for sharing a wonderful
experience in Northern Tanzania in the spring, 2006. Travel and
adventure have become my retirement project and, with over
55 countries visited to date, my Tanzania adventure rates as
one of my very favourites.
It is difficult to pick the most memorable day but two
experiences come to mind. One was the visit to the stunning
Ngorongoro Crater, driving in the jeep with Peter, our guide, and
observing so many animals in their natural habitat. The
other special day was when we walked for miles and miles across
the grasslands in Kimokouwa to deliver food staples to some Maasai
friends at their bomas. The sensations I felt that day were
unreal. It was like walking through a picture-perfect
postcard.
I appreciate you sharing "your Tanzania" with
me – no tour company could ever come close to matching the
fun times that we had together.”

Some Things to Know Before You Apply
Project TEMBO is centered in the villages of Longido
and Kimokouwa, in the northern part of the countryside, near the Kenya
border. This is about 100 km north of the nearest large city, Arusha. In this
area there is no electricity and no running water. For a few hours most
evenings, a generator provides power for battery charging. Outdoor
African-style toilets and bucket showers are the norm. Accommodation
is very basic in simple rooms with mosquito nets, although mosquitoes
are rare because of the dry conditions. Meals are nourishing yet simple
and repetitive, and usually consist of lots of rice, beans, and chapattis,
with very little meat or vegetables. Bottled water and soft drinks are
plentiful but usually warm. Wonderful spicy chai tea and “Africafe” coffee
are always available.
If you can deal with these conditions
for a few days then this rich cultural experience among the Maasai
people might be for you. Other parts of the trip – in Arusha and on safari – will
be quite similar to life in North America, but with a large dose of exotic
Africa. Trip dates are in January and July of each year, beginning in
2008.
