The TEMBO Guesthouse Project:
Providing Project Sustainability into the Future

Project TEMBO is embarking on an exciting new project to ensure the future sustainability of our projects with women and girls in northern Tanzania. We are asking for your assistance with a fundraising effort over the next few months.  This new income-generating women’s micro-business initiative will have far-reaching effects in our project area.

The new TEMBO Guesthouse will support many villagers, including these women and their families.

The Time is Right
Project TEMBO is proposing to build a guesthouse in northern Tanzania. There are several good reasons why the timing is perfect for this project:

  • The construction and operation of the guesthouse will provide meaningful employment for many people in Longido, a village where few people have regular employment and most live on less than $1.00 a day;
  • Longido has just been designated the newest “district” in Tanzania. Government offices are being set up, to be followed by a bank and hospital. Longido is also a designated cultural tourism destination. Accommodation for visitors will be necessary and the planned guesthouse will allow TEMBO to get in “on the ground floor”; and
  • Project TEMBO has just registered a new NGO (non-governmental organization) in Tanzania called “TEMBO Trust”. TEMBO Trust will manage the guesthouse as an income-generating project and will locate its office space in the TEMBO Guesthouse.

How You Can Help
Project TEMBO Canada is looking for individuals and organizations to be donors and partners in building, furnishing, and staffing the TEMBO Guesthouse in northern Tanzania. Land has been purchased, a Tanzanian contractor chosen, and blueprints have been drawn up. Our goal is to raise $100,000.00 and begin construction in January 2008. You can read details about the various aspects of this project in the TEMBO Guesthouse Proposal. Our design includes important conservation and environmental features such as a solar system for lights and power, a water harvesting system, and a septic system. The design is circular to reflect the Maasai boma structure, the common form of housing in the area.

lineProject TEMBO would like to thank John and Elizabeth Lawrence of Calgary, Alberta, and Mary McKechnie of L’Orignal, Ontario for launching the TEMBO Guesthouse Fund with their very generous contributions.

“Project Tembo and its volunteers are committed and focused on this northern region of Tanzania. During our visit to Longido in December 2006, we saw the benefits experienced by those touched by the organization through education and commercial activities. The construction and running of a Guest House is an ideal matching of the needs of Longido and the objectives of Project Tembo. We are pleased to donate to the financial requirements of the Guest House and will continue our support in the future.”

- John & Elizabeth Lawrence

“I am delighted to know that my entire donation will be used to support this worthy project.”

Sustainability is Key
An initiative that will ensure an ongoing source of income is crucial to the future success of Project TEMBO in Tanzania. There is a readiness among the women to work with us to develop this project with the assistance we are making available to them. With your help, we can provide them with the opportunity and the means to create a successful and sustainable micro-business venture.

A guesthouse initially funded by TEMBO will be the “engine” that generates returns right in the community, eventually replacing much of the funding currently provided by Project TEMBO in Canada. The time to build sustainability into this project is now if we hope to have a solid organization owned and managed by local women in 10 or 15 years time.

Visit canadahelps.org and make your donation to help us assist women in northern Tanzania to create a sustainable future for themselves and their families.
